European Garnacha/Grenache Quality Wines, a first-of-its-kind collaboration between Garnacha Origen Association (Spain) and Conseil Interprofessionnel des Vins du Roussillon (France) together with the support of the European Commission to unveil the Garnacha/Grenache grape's true potential in the USA will be participating in 2022 International Bulk Wine & Spirits Show for an educative seminar as part of a three-year European Union co-funded marketing campaign to raise awareness of one of the world's oldest and most widely planted wine grapes (being currently the seventh most planted grape variety in the world and the fifth most planted red grape).

Garnacha (a.k.a. Grenache), once the most widely planted red grape variety in the world and one of the oldest varietals, offers tremendous value for the US market, with over 50% increase in value. It originated in Europe, where 92 percent of the world's 195,896 hectares are located (primarily in Spain and France, which have the highest concentration of Garnacha/Grenache and the oldest vines).

“Who dared to bet on Garnacha 25 years ago? Nobody did… Happily enough, nowadays, Garnacha is being rediscovered… Fortunately, [the area where Garnacha originated]… has shaken off the tag of rough, tannic wines displaying proudly the grape’s name on some labels.”- José Peñín, Spanish wine guru  (Garnachagrenache)

While most are planted as red varieties (Tinta/"noir"), this diverse European wine grape also comes in white varieties (Blanca/blanc), grey varieties (gris), peluda, and tintorera (a.k.a. "Alicante Henri Bouschet"). Garnacha/Grenache's versatility and expressiveness lend themselves to a wide range of terroirs and winemaking approaches, resulting in a wide range of styles, from sparkling to still (whites, rosés, or reds; either light or full-bodied) and even fortified sweet wines, all with numerous food pairing options.

Highly sensitive to variations in growing conditions, both in time and place, the variety necessitates winemakers who understand how to interpret and handle European Garnacha/Grenache from each given terroir and vintage. Winemakers in Mediterranean Europe have mastered this art, building on centuries of knowledge passed down from generation to generation. Given the new challenges climate change poses in winemaking, these characteristics make European Garnacha/Grenache a sustainable variety. Due to its drought resistance, adaptability, and self-sufficiency, it was named "arguably the most eco-friendly grape in the world" at the 2011 World Climate Change and Wine Conference in Spain.

Origin is significant in the European production system, which is one of the most demanding and reliable. The EU's Geographical Indications regime protects the names of products that come from specific regions and have specific qualities and a reputation linked to the territory of production. PDOs Calatayud, Campo de Borja, Cariena, Somontano, Terra Alta, and Roussillon Geographical Indications (PDOs and PGIs) are a guarantee of their origin and quality in this context.
