Discover High Quality Wines From Paso Robles by Broken Earth Winery at IBWSS 2017

Broken Earth Winery is a customer-focused team proudly representing Paso Robles & committed to continuing to bolster the high-quality reputation of Paso Robles wines. Broken Earth Winery produces unique wines that are estate grown, harvested & bottled in Paso Robles.

Broken_Earth_Winery

Rancho Tierra Rejada, Spanish for “land of worked earth,” is the original name of the 2,500 acre Paso Robles ranch that is now home to the vineyards of Broken Earth Winery. Their unique wines reflect winemaker Chris Cameron’s committed & passionate approach to all aspects of winemaking. Structure & balance are most critical; each varietal released is an accurate reflection of the style & the region.

Broken Earth Winery remains committed to sustainable ideals, Their goal is to respect the land and its treasures with the belief that the soil will give its best only if it ‘feels’ its best, so attention to the earth’s health is critical.

Broken Earth Winery Wines

The wines of Broken Earth are made to accurately portray varietal definition, purity of fruit and balance. The palate must appear “seamless” and where more complex wines are intended, they must allow the layers of complexity to continually emerge as you familiarize yourself with the wine.

Broken_Earth_Winery

“Bright” is a term often used by the winemaking team to describe the wines as they show clarity of flavor with balancing acidity, essential for pairing with food. Each wine is an honest portrayal of the distinct characteristics of each variety, whether they be tiny parcels of hand selected fruit or larger, more complex blends.

Broken Earth Winery Vineyards

Rancho Tierra Rejada, Spanish for “land of worked earth,” is the original name of the 2,500 acre Paso Robles ranch that is now home to the vineyards that produce Broken Earth Wines. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, grain and cattle were the primary commodities here. It was a land of pioneer families, vaqueros, banditos, and cattle barons such as the Miller & Lux Cattle Company. Paso Robles defined the real and true west before 1900. That pioneer spirit lives on today at Broken Earth Winery.

Visionary Herman Schwartz purchased the property in 1973 and planted 520 acres to grapevines. Schwartz was an innovative grower with a keen interest in sustaining the environment and promoting Paso Robles as a high-quality wine grape growing region. He embraced sustainable farming techniques as they were first coming on to the scene in the early 1980s.

With the same eye toward the future, he eventually realized the need to upgrade the vineyard, replanting between 1995 and 1998, carefully choosing plant material appropriate to each site in the vineyard. The ranch was sold to the current owners in 2006, who remain committed to sustaining the environment by implementing technologically advanced farming methods.

The Vineyard is a model for growing first-quality Paso Robles wine grapes in an eco-friendly manner.

Broken_Earth_Winery

The Vineyard, previously known as “Continental Vineyards” at Rancho Tierra Rejada was established in 1973 as one of the first large-scale producers in the area. It is currently planted to 712.97 acres of premium wine grapes including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Chardonnay and other popular varieties. The Vineyard team has remained innovative and adaptable to sustainable farming techniques and practices over these 30+ years. They work hand-in-glove with their customers, tailoring farming techniques to suit each winemaking project.

Moving forward, Broken Earth Winery remains committed to sustainable ideals, and to continuing to bolster the high-quality reputation of Paso Robles wines. The Vineyard is located approximately 13 miles east of downtown Paso Robles, just north of Hwy 46E, in the area known as the Estrella Bench.

Private Label Wines

Broken Earth Winery’s in-house design team will work with you to create the perfect label.
Each design is tailored to fit your vision and then applied to their wonderful wines.

Their custom wine label service allows individuals, corporations, golf clubs, among others, to create their own unique custom wine labels. Personalized wine makes a beautiful, unique gift perfect for special occasions such as weddings, anniversaries, birthday celebrations and as corporate gifts.

Chris Cameron – EVP/Director of Winemaking

Chris Cameron is an International winemaker with a dynamic career in the wine industry that spans over 30 vintages. He has a committed and passionate approach to all aspects of winemaking.

Chris has been making wine in the Paso Robles wine growing area for the last four vintages and is very excited about what the area can do viticulturally, in being able to ripen both Bordeaux and Rhone varietals. In addition, Chris has significant crush and winemaking experience in Australia, Italy, France and Turkey.

He achieved international success by winning “The Best Merlot Worldwide” at the International Wine and Spirit Competition in London in addition to receiving recognition with many highly respected publications. His Australian credits include winning, among many others, their industry’s most prestigious wine award, the “Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy”.

Elise Herrera – Sales & Marketing Coordinator

Elise is a graduate of San Diego State University with her Bachelor’s in Psychology. She decided she was really bored with research statistics and wanted to enter the world of alcohol in 2013. She worked with Southern Wine and Spirits in a handful of roles before joining the Broken Earth Family in 2016 as the Sales and Marketing Coordinator.

Elise’s primary function is to work with their Distributor partners and ensure that their wine is being poured and on shelves all over the country.

Her favorite things about coming to work every day at Broken Earth Winery are the freedom she has to be creative in her role and the new experiences she is constantly introduced to.  She respects their winemakers continued determination to think and work outside the box and to create amazing wines with an underlying focus on sustainability.

Kate Hauber – Designer & Brand Coordinator

According to Kate, the beauty of this winery as well as the surrounding vistas and vineyards make a perfect backdrop to creating for Broken Earth’s Private Label Program. Kate takes pride in introducing herself as the Designer & Brand Coordinator and is here to help create private labels for you: everything from special occasion labels, corporate labels for your business, proposal & wedding private labels, to creating your own personalized wine brand.

Born and raised in San Luis Obispo, Kate grew up watching the vineyards in the county develop & flourish. In 2012, she graduated from Cal Poly and then lived in San Diego, cultivating her talents as a freelance graphic designer and feeding her interest in sustainable agriculture by volunteering at CSA farms and working at farmer’s markets, both in San Diego and eventually back in SLO county.

Joshua Pehle – Production Manager

Upon his studies at the University of Missouri in 2001, Joshua chose to begin his career with wine where all wine begins, in the vineyard.  There he fell in love with the art of grape growing and experienced firsthand the hard work and long hours one endures to grow exceptional vines.

After making the transition from vineyard work to the winery Joshua worked harvest at New Zealand’s Yealand Estate, apprenticed for Australia’s West Cape Howe Winery, and served internships in Napa Valley at the highly acclaimed Domaine Carneros and Silver Oak Cellars, as well as California’s very first commercial winery, Buena Vista.

Landing his first role as Enologist with Broken Earth in 2014, he’s become quite comfortable at the winery and is thrilled to be working alongside with a talented winemaker like Chris Cameron and the rest of the Broken Earth production team.

Aannie Bowsky – Marketing Assistant

Annie has been a California girl her entire life but has found her true home here on the Central Coast.

She grew up in Orange County then moved to San Francisco to live and go to college. After several visits to Paso Robles she discovered her passion for wine and enjoyed the laid back lifestyle – The deal was done.

Although she didn’t know much about wine at the time she was able to use her marketing and customer service background to get a foot in the wine industry. She has since worked at various wineries throughout the area trying to learn all aspects of the business and is happy to now have a home at Broken Earth Winery.

Bill Moularadellis

Managing Director

After graduating from Roseworthy with a winemaking degree in 1985, Bill was intent on setting up his own winery, which he did on his parent’s Riverland vineyard property that same year.

Bill’s winemaking skills and business acumen ensured the winery enjoyed steady growth throughout the 1980s and then when Australian wine began to grow in popularity overseas, Kingston Estate was well placed to help satisfy this new demand, with Bill jumping on a plane numerous times a year to visit key export markets.

He continues to run the winery as Managing Director and oversees winemaking as Chief Winemaker.

Bill is a past executive committee member of the South Australian Wine Industry Association, past Chairman and board member of the Riverland Wine Industry Development Council, past member of the Business Advisory Board to the Reserve Bank of Australia as well as a past non-executive board member of Wine Australia.

Bill is married to Ivanka and they have three beautiful daughters, the ‘Mo Sisters.’

Nina & Steve Moularadellis

Owners

Nina (short for Constantina) and Steve (Australian for Sarantos) both emigrated from Greece to Australia as young adults, seeking a better life in the ‘lucky country.’ They met while picking fruit in the Riverland region of South Australia, where they had both chosen to settle.

When they could afford it, they bought their own block of land on which they gradually planted fruit orchards as well as a vineyard. Nina and Steve had three children, two sons and a daughter; today they have seven grand children and both are still actively working at the winery.

Ivanka Moularadellis

Commercial Trading Manager

Born and bred in the Riverland, Ivanka started her working career with the Riverland Development Corporation and then moved to Adelaide in 1990 to undertake a Bachelor of Arts degree and a role as the Events Manager for the Lord Mayor of Adelaide. This was followed by a role as Sister Cities Program Manager for the City of Adelaide.

In 1999, Ivanka moved back to the Riverland and married Bill Moularadellis. They now have three girls Lauren, Victoria and Emma who can be regularly spotted around the family winery.

It was at that time that Ivanka started working in the family wine business in various roles including domestic sales management, export wine sales and human resources. Ivanka is now actively involved in Kingston’s leadership and commercial trading team and represents the Riverland Wine Industry Development Council on the South Australian Wine Industry Association Executive Committee

Bob Wiseman

Production and Compliance Manager

Bob graduated from Uni with an Applied Science Degree and started work with Berri Coop Winery (later to be Hardys and Constellation). Technical management opportunities led to an industry switch to the fruit juice industry and the subsequent 19 years working for Berri Ltd allowed him to gain experience in a number of roles including technical, manufacturing/production management and manufacturing software implementation.

A change of lifestyle was called for in the late 90’s with children requiring a father not to be interstate 2 weeks in 4 and so Bob left Berri Ltd for some consulting with some other management acquaintances. An opportunity came up to work with Bill in December 2000 when the short notice resignation of the incumbent Production Manager left a hole to be filled with weeks before the 2001 vintage. What started as a casual opportunity to help out for a few years has turned into a real career commitment. Bob has a high level of synergy with the Kingston Estate management philosophy and team.

Bob prides himself on providing a level of calmness and management professionalism which will stand Kingston Estate in good stead for the winery growth and development plans for the future.

LCW Services

Limestone_Coast_Wine

12,000 tonnes. That’s the number of grapes they process each vintage, offering their customers flexibility in production volumes, styles and wine varieties. Their large crop allows them to easily produce wine for the bulk buyer.

From little things, big things grow. They were built to produce premium wines in small batches, and in doing so have built a facility of considerable size. This flexibility allows them to switch between boutique and large scale production, managing any stage of the wine process – from sourcing the fruit, to bottling the finished product.

15,000 barrels. Six million bottles. That’s the number their one acre sized barrel hall can hold. With these facilities they can offer flexible and tailored contract winemaking services to local growers, producers, and corporate partners.

It’s not here that their appreciation for a drop or two ends. They produce other craft category beverages such as cider, ginger beer and RTD’s; tailored to their customer’s needs. They also have their very own ciders available to be enjoyed by one, or many.

The Team

Limestone_Coast_Wine

It’s their people that make LCW what it is; otherwise their grapes would remain just that.

Their combined expertise, wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm for making LCW everything it is today, is testament to both their character, and the product they produce.

Great things are created when their varied schools of thought merge; science and agriculture, instinct and considered thought.

They like to think of them as a finely balanced team.

Matt Christie

General Manager Operations

Matt brings extensive experience to the Operations and Management Teams at LCW. Having complete Bachelor Degrees in Chemisty & Biochemistry and Wine Science as well as an MBA in Business Management, Matt has experience working with some of the world’s biggest companies including Treasury Wine Estates, Southcorp, Visy and Evans & Tate.

In 2009 Leisha returned to the Limestone Coast to follow her passion for cool climate winemaking and is a familiar face at local industry meetings & tastings.

However what’s lesser known is his 13 years direct experience in the wine industry as a grower, and 25-year association through his family enterprise. With a background in manufacturing and time spent as a grower. Richie has firmly established industry relationships throughout the South East of Australia. Richie completed his Bachelor of Business at Swinburne University of Technology.

LCW Region

Limestone_Coast_Wine

Proud Ambassadors of the Limestone Coast

They are proud to represent the six flagship regions of The Limestone Coast: the long established classics of Padthaway, Wrattonbully, and Coonawarra, who consistently raise the bar in winemaking, cementing their reputable names. The emerging regions of Mount Benson, Robe, and Mount Gambier are evidently the ones to watch, as they begin to take top prize honours and promote contemporary new wine tastes.

Millions of years ago this land was covered by sea. As the sea resided, a bed of limestone was formed leaving in its place a landscape rich with shells, fish and even whale fossils. The nutrient rich, stony soils, layered over fossilised limestone, provides excellent drainage, balanced with perfect water retention. Influenced by their cool, coastal climate and artesian water supply, the grapes naturally ripen, slowly resulting in intense fruit flavours.

Limestone_Coast_Wine

The vineyards have undoubtedly benefited from this fertile land. Ensuring the conservation of the wider area’s natural beauty, wildlife, and heritage listed wetlands is their role as its inhabitants.
